I had been designing magic for them
Progress Note #005 May 2026. Little Tern Farm, Yaegl Country, Clarence Valley NSW.
Context: Painting. Noticing. Coming home to myself.
Observation
I have been bringing magic into the children's days deliberately. Sun catchers that throw rainbows across the walls. A wonder and joy jar. Morning dancing while we tidy. Handmade felt crowns for birthdays. Blessing our food. Watercolour placemats painted by small hands.
Yesterday we were painting the placemats and I got lost in it. Properly lost. The kind of lost where time moves differently.
I enjoyed it more than I expected to. More than I remembered was possible.
And then I noticed that. The forgetting.
Assessment
I had been designing magic for them. Sourcing it, planning it, holding the container for it, making sure they had enough wonder in their days. I was the architect of the enchantment, standing slightly outside it, making sure it worked.
What the painting reminded me is that I am also someone who needs to be inside the conditions I design. Not observing them. Not facilitating them. Inside them.
This is Zone 00. The person before the practitioner. The self before the system. It is the zone I write about and the zone I most reliably forget to tend.
I have been running on empty and calling it dedication.
Design Response
The Permaculture Nurse framework starts at Zone 00 for a reason. You cannot design outward from a depleted centre. The garden that never receives water eventually stops producing, no matter how well everything else is arranged.
Magic is not a reward for finished work. It is not something I resource the children with while I run on discipline and duty. It is part of the design. For me. Required, not optional.
I am adding it to my own prescription.
More painting. More getting lost. More remembering that the person who needs tending most is often the one doing all the tending.
Zone 00. The self. Where all design begins.
